Planning a New Website? Don’t Start With the Design.

When you decide it’s time for a new website, it’s easy to start thinking about the design first. You might start gathering inspiration, thinking about colors and photos, or imagining what you want your new website to look like.

As a website designer, I completely understand. I love that part too.

But after working with small business owners on their websites, I’ve learned that there’s something much more important to figure out first. Before you start designing your website, whether you’re doing it yourself or working with a professional, it helps to get clear on what you actually need your website to do for your business.

Because you can have a beautiful website and still have one that isn’t doing a very good job of connecting with the people you want to reach.

A Better Website Starts With Clarity

Your website has a lot of work to do in a pretty short amount of time. Someone may hear about your business from a friend, find you through Google, or come across you on social media and visit your website to learn more.

Once they arrive, they’re trying to figure out whether they’re in the right place. They want to understand what you do, whether you can help them, why they should trust you, and what they should do next.

When those pieces are clear, your website feels easier to navigate and your message feels intentional. When they aren’t, even a really beautiful website can leave someone unsure about your business.

That’s why I believe the best website projects start with strategy, not design.

A woman sits on a couch using a laptop, viewing a Google Doc titled “Section 1: Clarify Your Business.” The document lists reasons for business clarity and advice for understanding your target audience, essential steps when planning a new website.

There’s a Lot to Figure Out Before the Design Begins

When someone hires me to create a website, we don’t immediately jump into the design. Every website project starts with a Brand Discovery, where we take time to dig into the business, the people they want to reach, their goals, messaging, and what their website needs to accomplish.

It’s one of the most important parts of my process because it gives us a strong foundation for everything that comes next. Instead of making design and content decisions simply because something looks or sounds good, we can make those decisions based on what actually makes sense for the business.

This is also where I see just how much there is to think through before a website is ever designed.

Most business owners aren’t short on ideas. Usually, it’s the opposite. They have years of experience, multiple services, different types of clients, plans for the future, and plenty of things they want people to know.

The challenge is taking everything that’s in your head and turning it into a clear direction for your website.

What If You’re Not Ready to Hire a Website Designer?

Not everyone is ready to invest in a custom website project, and you shouldn’t have to wait until you are to start thinking strategically about your website.

Maybe you’re starting a new business and still figuring out what you want it to become. Maybe a new website is something you’re considering for later this year. Or maybe you already have a website and want to step back and think about whether it still reflects your business and where you’re headed.

You can start doing that work now.

And that’s a big part of what inspired the Website Clarity Blueprint.

An e-book titled “The Website Clarity Blueprint” is displayed on a tablet next to promo text: “Turn your scattered ideas into a clear strategy before the design begins—perfect for anyone planning a new website.” Button reads: “Get the Blueprint.”.

Bringing Website Strategy to More Business Owners

We created the Website Clarity Blueprint because we wanted to make this kind of strategic thinking more accessible.

We took some of the foundational areas that are important to think through before creating a website and turned them into a guided workbook that you can work through on your own, at your own pace.

The Blueprint helps you get your ideas out of your head, organize what matters, and start developing a clearer direction for your website. You’ll think through the foundation of your business and website strategy so that when you’re ready to make decisions about your website, you have something to base those decisions on.

It isn’t meant to replace the deeper Brand Discovery and strategy that happens when you work with me on a custom website. Instead, it gives you an accessible place to start.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

It Can Also Help You Prepare to Work With a Designer

Even if you already know that you eventually want to hire a professional, there’s a benefit to doing some of this thinking ahead of time.

You don’t need to come to a website designer with everything figured out. In fact, a good designer should help you work through the strategy and guide you through the process.

But spending some time thinking intentionally about your business beforehand can help you have better conversations with your designer. You’ll have a clearer sense of what matters to you, where you’re headed, and what you want your website to support.

Your designer can then take that foundation and help you go deeper, identify opportunities you may not have considered, and translate the strategy into a website that works for your business.

You Might Not Need a New Website Yet

There’s another reason I think doing this work first is so valuable: you may discover that a completely new website isn’t actually what you need right now.

Sometimes your website needs a redesign. Sometimes your business has evolved enough that the strategy, messaging, and design all need to change.

But other times, the foundation is there and a few thoughtful updates could make a meaningful difference.

Taking the time to step back and look at your website strategically can help you make that decision with much more confidence instead of assuming the answer is automatically a redesign.

Start With Clarity

A website is an investment in your business, whether you’re investing your own time into it or hiring someone to create it for you.

You want that investment to do more than give you something beautiful. You want a website that represents your business, connects with the people you want to serve, and supports where you’re trying to go next.

That starts before the design.

The Website Clarity Blueprint was created to give you an approachable way to start doing that foundational work now.

Work through it on your own. Take your time. Get your thoughts out of your head and onto the page. Then, when you’re ready to update your website, build something new, or work with a designer, you’ll have something incredibly valuable to start with:

clarity.
